H.I.V.E., meaning Human Interaction Visualization Engine, is a pedestrian simulation plugin for Grasshopper which leverages human interactions for generative architectural design. The socially-driven pedestrian simulation integrates social factors as a driver of design, enabling architects and urban planners to make more informed design decisions at varying scales. In doing so, H.I.V.E empowers designers to more holistically understand how people may utilize different spaces by humanizing the computational design process.

H.I.V.E. offers three different methodologies for conducting a socially-driven pedestrian simulation. The network-based simulation method operates on large-scale scenarios by abstracting the relationships between buildings and spaces as a network of nodes and edges. The cellular autonoma method operates on medium-scale scenarios by introducing spatial characteristics to agents and programs in a two-dimensional space. The physics-based simulation operates on the smallest-scale scenarios by allowing agents to interact through vector forces within a bounded, three-dimensional space.

H.I.V.E. was built by Puja Bhagat (M.Arch.) and Jonathan Wong (M.Arch.) as a element of their M.Arch thesis for the Emergent Design and Technologies (EmTech) postgraduate programme at the Architectural Association under the supervision of Dr. Elif Erdine and Dr. Milad Showkatbakhsh.
